Independent Shorts Awards Features GDG Member: Leslie Abney!

GDG Member Leslie Abney featured on the Independent Shorts Awards

Leslie Abney teamed up with Tonya Kay on an amazing filming project to complete the storyboards for the short entitled, “The Ascension of Ava Delaine.” This 5 minute short film was shot entirely on drone, in one single take. Wow!

Leslie storyboarded not only an Official Selection at the Independent Shorts Awards, but also an Honorable Mention win at Hollywood New Director’s Film Fest, a Semi-Finalist at Los Angeles Cinefest and an Official Selection at Female Filmmakers Film Fest!

The Ascension of Ava Deliane,” is a short film project that reveals the bold efforts of a woman transitioning into a more secure, confident, sexual, and progressively more valuable woman as she ages. The filming project is the Directorial debut of Tonya Kay, and was lead by a diverse team and crew that strove to break boundaries and helped to increase the representation of women and minorities. This female-led and female-centered project had a crew where 80% were female and 30% were People of Color.

Other Team members included Andria Chamberlin who served as the Cinematographer/Drone operator, Writer and Co-Producer Shaula Evans, and Sound Designer Jaimie Billings; who all contributed their skills and experience on this fantastic and impressive film project!

Congratulations Leslie, Tonya, Andria, Shaula, and Jaimie! We here at GDG can’t wait to see you soar high again!

Cleopatra: Egyptian Pin Up Art Show & Party

unnamed

80th Anniversary Celebration! Egyptian Pin Up Art Show & Party In The Courtyard!

Movie at 7 PM. Art Show pre-show opening from 5 – 7 PM.

Egyptian Theatre • Sun, Oct 5, 2014 • 7:00pm
http://www.americancinemathequecalendar.com/content/cleopatra-0

Presented by the American Cinematheque at the Egyptian Theatre in Association with Girls Drawin’ Girls. Sponsored by Golden Road Brewery, Six Point Harness, and Acme Archives, with the support of Hollywood Heritage.

Join us in celebrating the exact 80th anniversary of the premiere of Cecil B. DeMille’s CLEOPATRA starring Claudette Colbert. This version of the life of beautiful and powerful queen of Egypt, Cleopatra is known for its outlandish spectacle, including luxurious, risque gowns that are more slinky 1930s high fashion than ancient Egypt, but that is part of the film’s enduring charm! As a companion to the film screening is an art show.

5:00PM: Guests will be admitted to see a solo exhibition by Ashley Brooke Cooper of ancient Egyptian inspired “pin up” art.

7:00PM: Film screening of CLEOPATRA (see description below).

9:00PM: Following the film is a party in the courtyard with photo ops, Egyptian themed activities, make-up stations, a “Make Your Own Mummy” contest and drinks sponsored by Golden Road Brewery.

Although outrageously appropriate to have originally premiered at the Egyptian, CLEOPATRA did not in fact make its debut in 1934 at our theatre. But, is there a more perfect place to celebrate its 80th anniversary?
Dress like an Egyptian and you might win a prize!

CLEOPATRA (1934)
1934, Paramount (Universal), 100 min, USA, Dir: Cecil B. DeMille

Mogul and architect of epics Cecil B. DeMille weaves a historical tapestry poised somewhere between high camp and outlandish spectacle, directing the scintillating Claudette Colbert in her youthful prime as the wily Egyptian queen. A naughty pre-Code product, the film boasts an array of scandalous costumes. With Warren William as Julius Caesar and Henry Wilcoxon as Marc Antony.

Special Ticket Prices: $13 General, $11 Students/Seniors, $9 Members. No vouchers accepted for this or any other specially-priced program. | You must have a ticket to the event for admission into all areas – art show, film screening, and after party.

About Girls Drawin’ Girls: Girls Drawin Girls (GDG) was founded in 2006 by Simpsons veteran Melody Severns, who started Girls Drawin’ Girls as a way to showcase female artists working in the male-heavy animation industry.  She felt it was time for these talented women to demonstrate their creative abilities and their own personal vision of sex appeal by re-interpreting the field of pin-up art.

Since it’s conception, the group has published two volumes of pin-up art and has grown to over 200 active members worldwide, whose work has been showcased in various entertainment industries, from production design, film and television animation, to graphic design.

About 6PH: 6 Point Harness (6PH) is a creative and visionary animation studio which develops and produces premium content through its suite of high-end tools and services.  The Los Angeles based studio is both a world-class producer of original animated content and a resource for top-shelf animation production from inception of projects to execution.  The 6PH team is known for its development skills and technical knowledge, as well as a company that provides artists, writers and creatives a unique and effective outlet to display talent and tell stories.

About Chuck Jones Gallery: The Chuck Jones Gallery is the only gallery in San Diego devoted to the art of the animated film, representing not only the work of its namesake, four-time Academy Award recipient and legendary animation director and creator, Chuck Jones, but also art work by Dr. Seuss and all animation studios. Included in the ongoing gallery exhibits are original paintings and fine art editions by artists such as Mike Kungl, Bob Elias, Mike Peraza, Eric Goldberg, and Fabio Napoleoni. The gallery is open seven days a week from 10 to 8 PM, except on Sunday when they close at 6 PM. The gallery website is at ChuckJones.com.
